What is a Doula?

A Doula is a non medical professional that offers continuous emotional and physical support to a woman and her partner before, during, and after childbirth.  Having continuous support lowers interventions, decreases the need for pain medication, and increases the overall satisfaction of the birth experience.

Why Do I Need a Doula?

Imagine you enter a surfing competition in hopes of winning the grand prize. The day of the event arrives, you grab a board and begin paddling out into the ocean. Having never surfed before your timing is off. You attempt to stand and are quickly knocked off your board and overtaken by the wave. Panic sets in as you desperately try to come up for air. The waves keep coming and now you are gasping for breath as you surface. You realize you lost your board and there is no land in sight. The next set of waves are coming... bigger and stronger....what are you going to do? Lucky for you there is a more experienced surfer nearby who is able to guide you ashore. The surfer explains that winning this event takes weeks of preparing both mentally and physically. Perhaps even hiring a professional for lessons!

Just like a surf competition, labor can last for hours and even days. The contractions are like waves and you either learn to ride them or be consumed by them. The more prepared you are for the event the greater the reward!
